Read first

Work top to bottom. Same logic as the a7 checklist: files before focus, focus before buttons, buttons before the U dial, because a U box snapshots everything that came before it.

Budget 30 to 45 minutes. The GR's menu is small. Items marked ● are the ones that cause real problems if skipped.

Menu locations use the camera's own tab lettering: A Still Image, D Customize, E Setup, each followed by the page number shown on screen. A2 means the second page of the A tab.

Ticks are saved in this browser, so you can stop and come back. CLEAR resets them.

Baseline

Unlike the a7, this body cannot export settings to a card. If the camera is not fresh, phone photos of the ADJ, Fn, and U-box screens are the only record you get.

Update firmware to 1.60 E8 › Firmware Info/Options Download from Ricoh, copy the file to the card root, run the update from this menu on a full battery. Recent versions fixed Shake Reduction stability and added the Negative-Film look, and this checklist assumes current firmware throughout. Set date and time E10 › Date Adjustment Embed copyright in every file E1 › Copyright Information Embed Copyright Data On · your name in Copyright Information Format the card in camera E1 › Format Format offers Memory Card and Internal Memory. The internal 2GB is the emergency reserve for the day you pocket the camera without a card, so format both and leave the internal one empty.

Files

File format RAW+ as the resting state A5 › File Format RAW+JPEG The street default keeps raw for editing. The running recipes override to JPEG inside their own U boxes, so the base state can afford the safety margin. JPEG size and aspect A5 › JPEG Recorded Pixels · Aspect Ratio L · 3:2 Color space sRGB A5 › Color Space These JPEGs go to phones and the web, not to print. AdobeRGB shifted to the wrong viewer looks flat. Filename prefix and numbering E1 › File Name · Sequential Numbering Two-character prefix · Sequential Numbering Folder & File Pick a prefix that is not R0 so GR files never collide with another camera's defaults in one Lightroom folder.

Focus & Snap

This is the camera's whole reason to exist. Everything else on this page is housekeeping.

Full Press Snap on A1 › Full Press Snap A soft half-press still autofocuses normally. A hard jab straight through skips AF and fires at the snap distance. No focus lag, no missed moment: the entire street default rides on this switch. Snap Focus Distance 2.5m A1 › Snap Focus Distance The resting distance. U2 overrides to 3.5m for head-on runners. With ADJ holding this setting (section 05) you can move it without entering the menu. Focus mode Auto-area AF A1 › Focus For the soft-press case. Snap arrives via the full press, so the dedicated Snap focus mode stays unnecessary day to day. Face/Eye Detection on A1 › Face/Eye Detection AF assist light off A1 › AF Assist Light A bright lamp announcing the camera defeats a pocket camera. In light too dim for AF, the full-press snap does not need to focus anyway. Touch screen off D2 › LCD Touch Operation Off One-handed carry means a palm across the screen constantly. Every recipe on the card is button-driven, so the touch layer only exists here as an accident generator.

Exposure

Auto ISO range and minimum shutter A2 › ISO Setting ISO AUTO · Upper Limit 6400 · Lower Limit 100 · Minimum Shutter Speed 1/500 This is the street default's engine: P mode holds 1/500 and spends ISO instead. Same mechanism as the a7's Min SS, same failure mode: when ISO hits 6400 the camera drops below the floor silently. Metering Multi-segment A2 › AE Metering The resting choice. Highlight-weighted for harsh sun is two clicks away once ADJ holds metering (section 05). HDF off A2, the row where the standard body shows ND Filter The HDF body has no ND filter: the Highlight Diffusion Filter sits in its place. Off is the resting state, since it softens highlights on every frame. The pan recipe absorbs the missing 2 stops with aperture instead. Program Line Normal A2 › Program Line Auto EV Compensation off A2 › Auto EV Compensation In M it quietly re-corrects an exposure you set on purpose. The pan recipe is M for exactly the reason this should stay off.

Image

White balance Auto as the resting state A3 › White Balance The running recipes fix Daylight inside their U boxes so a set grades as one set. The resting state can stay Auto because the street default keeps raw. Pick the JPEG look and commit A6 › Image Control U1 and U2 are JPEG only, so this choice is baked into every running frame with no raw to fall back on. Positive Film and Negative-Film are the usual suspects. Decide once, in daylight, not per shot. D-Range Correction both Auto A6 › D-Range Correction Highlight Correction Auto · Shadow Correction Auto Cheap insurance on JPEG-only frames, where blown highlights have no raw rescue behind them. High-ISO Noise Reduction Auto A6 › Noise Reduction Shake Reduction and Horizon Correction on A7 › Shake Reduction · Horizon Correction Horizon Correction levels small tilts with the SR unit. Shooting one-handed at running pace, a degree of tilt is the most common flaw in the set, and this erases it for free.

Controls

The ADJ lever is the Fn menu of this camera: press it in and five settings sit one flick apart.

Load the ADJ menu with the five that matter D2 › ADJ Mode Setting Snap Focus Distance · ISO Setting · AE Metering · Image Control · HDF These are exactly what the recipes toggle between: snap 2.5m to 3.5m, Multi to Highlight-weighted, and the HDF look two clicks away without spending a button on it. Everything else can live in the menu. Fn button: Snap Focus Distance D2 › Fn Button Setting The one setting worth a dedicated physical button, reachable without looking. The HDF body ships with Fn as the HDF toggle; move that to ADJ and give the button to snap distance. Movie button: JPEG to RAW+ toggle D2 › Fn Button Setting › Movie/Wireless Button JPEG→RAW+ You do not shoot video on this body. A dead button becomes the raw switch for the frame that deserves editing headroom mid-run. 4-way controller: Direct Key Priority D2 › 4-way Controller The printed functions fire on press instead of moving an AF point you do not use. Snap shooting never moves an AF point.

Display, Power, Sound

Grid 3x3, standard info display D3 › Grid Style · Shooting Info. Display Instant Review off D3 › Instant Review The rhythm of the street default is shoot and keep walking. Review is an invitation to stop, and it spends the battery this camera does not have. Sleep 1 min, Auto Power Off 5 min, LCD dim on E7 › Sleep Mode · Auto Power Off · LCD Auto Dim Battery is this camera's one real weakness, and the screen is where it goes. Wake from sleep is fast enough that aggressive timeouts cost nothing. Two charged spares in the bag regardless. Silence it E5 › Volume 0 The leaf shutter is nearly silent. The beeps are the only thing that gives the camera away, and they serve nobody.

The U Dial

The payoff. Six boxes exist; the card uses three. Configure the camera fully for a recipe, save it to a box, then point a dial position at the box.

How to save one

P is not a slot and is never saved: it runs the camera’s one pool of live settings, which persists on its own, and sections 01 to 06 configured it. Only the U positions are snapshots.

For each U mode: turn the dial to the exposure mode the recipe calls for, set up the whole camera, then D1 › Save Settings into a box and name it. Then D1 › Recall assigns the box to USER1, USER2, or USER3 on the dial. Building a U mode edits the same live pool P uses, which is why the last item below walks it back.

A box stores exposure mode, exposure comp, the A menus, the D2 controls, and the grid. Anything you change while sitting in a U mode reverts when the dial moves, same rule as the a7's MR slots. To make a tweak permanent, re-save the box.

U1 · Group run, in the pack Av · f/5.6 · Auto ISO 100 to 6400 · min shutter 1/500 · snap 2.5m + full-press · Multi · +0.5 EV · WB Daylight · JPEG · SR + Horizon on Bake the exposure comp in: sky-heavy frames pull Multi down and faces go dark, and nobody dials comp mid-run. Name the box RUN-PACK. U2 · Head-on Av · f/5.6 · Auto ISO 100 to 6400 · min shutter 1/1000 · snap 3.5m + full-press · Multi · Continuous drive · JPEG 3.5m is the snap distance Ricoh added for this 40mm body, and it exists for exactly this shot. At f/5.6 the zone runs roughly 2m to 7m. Name the box HEAD-ON. U3 · Pan M · 1/60 · ISO 100 · f/16 sun, f/8 shade · HDF off · Continuous drive · snap 2.5m · SR off · Horizon Correction off M, not Tv: an auto aperture would wander and take the snap zone with it. No ND on this body, so set aperture to the light before shooting; f/16 diffraction does not read in a pan. SR is off here because the GR has no panning detection and fights the sweep; it goes back on everywhere else. Name the box PAN. Reset the resting state Dial to P · snap 2.5m · RAW+ · Multi · WB Auto · HDF off P mode itself is the street default. There is no box for it: the camera as configured by sections 01 to 06 is the recipe. After saving the U boxes, walk the settings back to this state and leave the dial on P.

Verify

Dial through U1 to U3 and shoot each Confirm file format, EV comp, and min shutter actually stuck. Saving the box before finishing the setup is the classic mistake, same as the a7's MR slots. Test the full-press snap Aim at something far, jab the shutter hard in one motion. The frame should fire instantly with focus at 2.5m, near subject sharp, background soft. If the camera hunts first, Full Press Snap is off. Test the remapped buttons Fn should move snap distance. The movie button should flip JPEG to RAW+ and back. ADJ press-in should show the five settings from section 05, in order. Charge the spares Two, always. The body also charges over USB-C, so the running vest's power bank is a third battery in practice.
